Background
Charlie joined Reality Strikes Academy in September 2025 after struggling to attend school for nearly a year. During this time, his confidence had significantly reduced, and he had become increasingly disengaged from education. Returning to a full-time school environment felt overwhelming and, at that stage, unachievable.
Our Approach
At Reality Strikes Academy, Charlie was supported through a nurture-based, trauma-informed approach. From the outset, the focus was on building trust, creating a safe and structured environment, and reintroducing learning in a way that felt manageable for him.
Staff worked closely with Charlie to provide consistent support, clear routines, and opportunities to succeed. Using sport—particularly football—as a key engagement tool allowed Charlie to reconnect with something he enjoyed, helping to rebuild his confidence and motivation.
Building Confidence Through Sport
A major milestone in Charlie's journey was his involvement in football. Through the support of Reality Strikes Academy, Charlie joined a football team outside of school for the first time in his life. This gave him the opportunity to develop teamwork skills, build friendships, and experience a sense of achievement.
As a result of his commitment and progress, Charlie was also given the opportunity to meet a local football club captain. This experience was incredibly inspiring for him and helped reinforce his growing confidence and aspirations.
Progress and Outcomes
Over time, Charlie made significant progress. He developed stronger relationships with staff and peers, improved his emotional regulation, and became more engaged in learning. Most importantly, he began to believe in his ability to succeed.
Where He Is Now
Charlie has now successfully transitioned into a new school placement, where he is attending five days a week. This is a significant achievement and reflects the hard work, resilience, and determination he has shown throughout his journey.

Charlie's journey highlights the importance of the right support at the right time. Through a personalised, relationship-led approach and opportunities beyond the classroom, he has been able to rebuild his confidence and re-engage with education.
